Cubs mystery begins to clear up
By AJ Mass
For some time now, the Chicago Cubs have said they are hoping to end their managerial search before the start of baseball's winter meetings, set to begin on November 11. According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, there is a "working list" of candidates that has at least seven names on it, but as of Thursday, only five names on that list were confirmed.
Those five names are reported to be Rick Renteria, Dave Martinez, A.J. Hinch, Manny Acta and Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo, who will not be available for an interview until the end of the World Series. Now, the Chicago Tribune says they know the identity of a sixth name from the list: former Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge, who is said to have been contacted by the team and will interview for the job sometime next week.
As for who might be the "mysterious No. 7" on the list, Wittenmyer would only rule out the following: "Jim Leyland, Don Mattingly, Cardinals third-base coach Jose Oquendo, Indians first-base coach Sandy Alomar, Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux or any in-house coaches from Dale Sveum’s staff." Stay tuned!
