Howard taking baby steps
By AJ Mass
The long road back from knee surgery will take a huge step forward for Ryan Howard when the Philadelphia Phillies first baseman resumes baseball activities on Thursday.
The team's assistant general manager, Scott Proefrock, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Howard was ready to begin a hitting program, as well as taking ground balls, and jogging. Clearly that's a long way off from actual game action, but the team is optimistic that their first baseman can see some game action before the end of the season, even if it isn't at the major league level.
"I think the main thing for (Howard) is to get (him) to the point where there are no surprises in spring training next year," Proefrock said. As such, don't expect the team to rush this process in the slightest bit. So don't expect to see Howard playing for the Phillies again in 2013, either.
