D-backs out front for Peavy?
By Jason A. Churchill
We noted earlier Tuesday that the Arizona Diamondbacks were shopping Ian Kennedy and Jason Kubel, perhaps in order to clear space to add a pricey trade target, such as right-hander Jake Peavy. Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com follows up those reports that the D-backs now are the frontrunners to land Peavy.
Kennedy and Kubel haven't yet been traded, but the club has some control there. They can trade the two, or clear payroll another way, over the winter, or exercise their right to decline Kubel's option. Kennedy is arbitration eligible for the second time.
The Red Sox are another team on Peavy, and there could be others that step up over the next several hours. The Snakes have some ammo in the form of prospects, including left-hander Tyler Skaggs, that may interest White Sox GM Rick Hahn.
It's worth noting that Peavy has been scratched for his Tuesday start, suggesting trade talks are deep enough for the Sox to avoid the risk of injury.
