Latest on Lee
By Jason A. Churchill
All was quite on the Cliff Lee front until recently, but the past few days have produced scattered reports that the Philadelphia Phillies, thanks to an 8-game losing streak, are fielding calls on the southpaw, despite Chase Utley being a player GM Ruben Amaro isn't planning to trade.
Rob Bradford reports that the Boston Red Sox have interest in Lee, among other players, but that the price remains too high. ESPN Insider's Jim Bowden tweets that the Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals "are really the only two teams that have the payroll room and prospect flexibility to make a legitimate run at Lee."
The Texas Rangers, who acquired Matt Garza earlier this month, have yet to be linked to Lee and may be done adding starting pitching. The Baltimore Orioles may be one of those 'other' clubs Bowden alluded to, which likely means they'll stay away from Lee and Jake Peavy.
The Dodgers have been linked to Lee, too, as they were a year ago, but probably lack the prospects to make such a deal.
