Second base upgrade in Oakland?
By Jason A. Churchill
The Oakland Athletics are again contending in the American League West, having hit the break with a two-game lead in the division, and if anything they'll be buyers as the trade deadline approaches. There's one main area of need that sticks out more than others: Second Base
The A's rank No. 11 in the American League in OPS from their second basemen, with Eric Sogard struggling extensively the past several weeks. If the Phillies entertain offers fro Chase Utley, the A's may be a fit.
More likely, the Athletics could check in on the availability of Marco Scutaro, though it's unclear the Giants will flip the for sale sign on and whether or not Scutaro would be on the menu if they did.
The club could look to acquire a shortstop -- Jimmy Rollins? Jamey Carroll? -- and slide Jed Lowrie to second base.
The club hasn't received a lot of production from their corner outfielders, but Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Reddick are not likely to be replaced anytime soon. First base or DH is another area the club could look to improve. Brandon Moss has been strong at first, but the mix of DHs hasn't performed.
