Marlins open for business?
By Jason A. Churchill
The Miami Marlins are receiving calls on their players as the trade deadline nears, writes Juan C. Rodriguez of the Florida Sun-Sentinel. This is no surprise, as the club has been out of contention for weeks, sitting 20 games back in the National League East and are just as far back in the Wild Card hunt. Other than the obvious names -- Giancarlo Stanton and right-hander Ricky Nolasco, whom we have discussed here and here -- the Fish may have some pieces other clubs covet.
Relievers Steve Cishek, Chad Qualls and Mike Dunn could be part of trade conversations, as could part-time players Juan Pierre and Greg Dobbs.
Right-hander Kevin Slowey, who has made 13 of his 14 appearances as a starter, could also be trade bait.
Cishek could be a fit for clubs looking for a late-inning relief arm with closing experience -- Boston? Detroit? Dodgers? -- while Nolasco may be among the better options this side of Cliff Lee.
