Making room for Garza
By Jason A. Churchill
Right-hander Matt Garza went six strong innings in a rehab start Thursday and may be on track to be activated from the disabled list next week, perhaps versus the Pirates on the road.
Once Garza is ready, the Cubs will have to make a roster move to clear space for him, as well as find room for the veteran in the starting five.
Carlos Villanueva has been struggling of late, including a disaster outing Tuesday when he allowed 12 hits and seven earned runs in five innings. He appears to be the most likely candidate to move out of the rotation and into the bullpen, which would allow him to return to the long man role he has occupied before.
To clear a place on the 25-man and 40-man rosters, reliever Shawn Camp, who has surrendered 13 earned runs in 16 innings of work, appears to be the odd-man out, based on performance.
