Bedard's chances in Houston

By Doug Mittler

An Opening Day starter for the Pirates last season, Erik Bedard will try to resurrect his career in Houston after agreeing to a minor league deal with the Astros on Monday.

The 33-year-old southpaw made 24 starts for the Pirates last year and went 7-14 with a 5.01 ERA, but that could be good enough for the fourth spot in the Astros rotation behind right-handers Bud Norris, Lucas Harrell and Jordan Lyles,  says MLB.com's Brian McTaggert.

The addition of Bedard could lead to a wide open race for the fifth starter’s role, a competition that includes right-handers Philip Humber, Alex White, John Ely and Jarred Cosart and left-hander Dallas Keuchel.
