Federowicz to big leagues?
By Jason A. Churchill
A.J. Ellis is batting .283/.394/.402 in 26 games and is considered a solid defender. The Los Angeles Dodgers are fine behind the plate, at least in terms of the starter. Prospect Tim Federowicz, one of the more sound defensive catchers in the minors, is off to a strong start in 13 games at Triple-A Albuquerque, collecting 26 hits in his first 49 at-bats.
Federowicz has seven home runs, too, though the power is at least partially thanks to his home ballpark, but he's also torched the ball at a .435 clip on the road. It's a small sample size, but the 25-year-old had a strong season last year, too.
While Ellis is inexpensive and very deserving of his job in the big leagues, backup Ramon Hernandez is just 1-for-22, including an 0-for-4 outing Tuesday versus Arizona.
More of the same from both parties and Federowicz could be called upon to back up Ellis.
