D-Backs bullpen sans Putz
By Jason Catania
With J.J. Putz on the shelf, the Arizona Diamondbacks have had to switch things up in the late innings.
For now, Putz is on the DL with an elbow injury and is expected to be shut down for at least the next two weeks, per Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic.
Veteran Heath Bell, who owned 153 saves coming into 2013, will get the first shot to handle the ninth inning, and he went 3-for-3 in opportunities last week.
Meanwhile, Matt Reynolds a left-hander, does have two saves, and while he's been good versus hitters on either side of the plate, he's especially difficult for left-handed batters, so he may be too valuable in a specialist role to be given regular ninth-inning duty -- unless the opposing hitters are lefties.
There's also David Hernandez, one of the game's better setup man three years running, but the righty already has three blown saves this season and has served up four homers in 17 2/3 innings -- after allowing four in each of the past two seasons.
