Impact of Carter's new role
By Jason A. Churchill
Chris Carter is headed for more time at first base and designated hitter, GM Jeff Luhnow said Monday, which may be a permanent move in the long run.
Carter is considered a fringy defender in the outfield, at best, so the move helps the club's overall defensive prowess. The club designated for assignment outfielder Rick Ankiel Monday, among other moves, and added three potential outfield contributors to the roster in Trevor Crowe, J.D. Martinez and Jimmy Paredes.
With Carter out of the outfield mix for the most part, Robbie Grossman, who was called up last month and is earning the approval of skipper Bo Porter of late, will continue to play everyday, and the new trio can share the two corner outfield spots. Justin Maxwell is expected to return in about a month, at which time one of the part-timers will return to the minors.
