Is Headley trade bait?
By Jason A. Churchill
It's a possibility either way, but since Chase Headley says he will not negotiate a contract extension during the season, he may be as good as gone from a San Diego Padres uniform.
The Padres, according to reports, are preparing a record offer for Headley, expected to be presented before the club would have to start fielding calls on their best player. Despite Headley's statement, it's difficult to believe that he wouldn't listen to a fair offer or even sign an extension.
One factor in all of this around baseball is the lack of available position players and a thin free agent crop. If the Padres wish to contend anytime in the next two or three years, keeping Headley may be necessary.
Among the clubs that may be the best trade fits if an extension is not worked out this summer include the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates.
