The Braves and Justin Upton
By Jason A. Churchill
When Justin Upton rejected a trade to the Seattle Mariners last week among the first thoughts included the idea that perhaps the right fielder prefers the east coast, and most of all may be looking to be deal to the Atlanta Braves where his older brother just signed a long-term contract. The Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers have also had discussions with the Diamondbacks and none of the above three clubs are on Upton's no-trade list.
David O'Brien reports via Twitter that the Braves have not had renewed talks with the D-backs about Upton since the news broke of the vetoed trade to the Mariners and a source told Rumor Central recently that GM Frank Wren is unlikely to part with top prospects such as Julio Teheran in a package for Upton. Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said over the weekend that the asking price for Upton will not change, either, so Atlanta may be a pipe dream for Upton for the time being.
The New York Mets and San Diego Padres have also been mentioned but the price in young talent has proven too great thus far. The Rangers, still, appear to be the best fit, but GM Jon Daniels stated last week that they have made their best offer.
