Pirates still like Iglesias
By Doug Mittler
There was buzz in December that the Pittsburgh Pirates were targeting Boston shortstop Jose Iglesias as part of the deal for Joel Hanrahan.
The Hanrahan deal ended up getting done without Iglesias, but MLB.com’s Tom Singer wonders if the Pirates might be willing to make another run at the 23-year-old infielder given the Red Sox are still shopping for a lefty-hitting first baseman outfielder. A deal for Iglesias would have to be part of a larger deal that might include first baseman Garrett Jones.
Iglesias has been billed as Boston’s shortstop of the future, but hit just .118 in a 25-game stint for the Red Sox last season. For now, the Pirates’ shortstop is Clint Barmes, who will make $5.5 million in 2013.
