Marcum back Saturday?
By Doug Mittler
If all goes well in an extended spring training game Monday in Port St. Lucie, Shaun Marcum is due to be activated by the New York Mets in time to face the Phillies Saturday at Citi Field, reports Adam Rubin.
Marcum, who is due to throw 70 pitches, began the season on the disabled list with neck and shoulder injuries after signing a one-year, $4 million deal. With Marcum nearing a return, the Mets designated fill-in Aaron Laffey for assignment and promoted left-handed reliever Robert Carson from Triple-A Las Vegas.
The Mets will have a few days to clear a space for Marcum, but one roster casualty could be long reliever Jeurys Familia.
Pick up Marcum?
" While Marcum is certainly a recurring injury risk, it should be noted he rarely pitches poorly, making him a worthy spot starter for fantasy owners. He’s not a good long-term investment, though. Marcum’s ERA since his rookie season is 3.67, with a 1.18 WHIP. That’s very good, and he’s a capable strikeout contributor. I’ll predict maybe 25 starts, but they should be good ones, making him a borderline top-75 starter in ESPN 10-team mixed formats."
