Headley returns, trade talk starts
By Jason A. Churchill
San Diego Padres All-Star third baseman Chase Headley returned to the San Diego Padres lineup Wednesday after a short rehab stint in the minors. he went 1-for-4 with a walk, strikeout and a run batted in in five trips to the plate against the Dodgers.
Headley's return will undoubtedly restart trade rumors with the player and club unable to make significant progress in contract extension talks. The two sides could reconvene soon to give it one more shot, but it might make more sense for the club to bring in a haul of young talent.
Among the clubs that could use a mid-prime all-star third baseman include ... pretty much every team but the Tigers, Rangers, Mets, Rays, Nationals and Giants, who each have established stars or near-stars at the hot corner, plus a few clubs that have a plan moving forward with young talents, such as the Red Sox (Will Middlebrooks), Royals (Mike Moustakas) and Blue Jays (Brett Lawrie). The Orioles are using Manny Machado at the position, but could eventually slide him back to shortstop, opening up third base.
Specific fits may include the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers would have to commit to Hanley Ramirez as their shortstop, but they've hinted at doing so, anyway, so we can't completely eliminate them as a possibility.
