If Wandy can't go
By Jason A. Churchill
Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Wandy Rodriguez was forced to leave his start Monday with a hamstring injury, and is expected to be reevaluated Tuesday.
If Rodriguez has to miss a start, the Bucs are likely to choose between a small handful of options to start in the southpaw's place. Right-hander Jeanmar Gomez, who relieved Rodriguez Monday, could be one of them. The other candidates include Kyle McPherson, Andrew Oliver or Phil Irwin, all of whom are already on the 40-man roster.
The club's top prospect, right-hander Gerrit Cole, is not on the 40-man roster and it is likely to take more than a one-start fill-in to get the Pirates to call on Cole, and they may prefer to let him complete his development with ample time in Triple-A Indianapolis this season.
Oliver has big-league experience, though he hasn't had a lot of success just yet. Irwin and Oliver each put up strong pitching lines in their first starts of the season in the International League.
