Manuel's lame duck status
By Doug Mittler
Charlie Manuel is officially a lame duck manager, but that is not an issue for Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.
Amaro has no plans to explore a contract extension or talk about Manuel’s future until the season ends, reports Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. Manuel won five straight division titles from 2007 to 2011 and took home a World Series title in 2008, but his future has come under heightened scrutiny following a third-place finish last season.
Manuel is by no means the only manager in the final year of his deal – the list includes Detroit’s Jim Leyland – so Amaro does not see his skipper’s status becoming a distraction. The Phillies could look to go in another direction if they struggle again this season, and Amaro is only keeping his options open.
