Timing, fits for Hernandez
By Jason A. Churchill
Ramon Hernandez was designated for assignment Thursday by the Colorado Rockies, who are going with Wilin Rosario and Yorvit Torrealba behind the dish. Hernandez was the subject of trade chatter all spring, but apparently the interest in Hernandez is minimal.
The club started the process with 10 days to trade the veteran and are now down to about three days. Dealing him shouldn't be difficult if they are willing to cover a sizable portion of the $3.2 million owed to the 36-year-old Hernandez for 2013.
Potential fits include the New York Yankees and perhaps even the Mets if they prefer not to start the year with rookie Travis d'Arnaud and want a more experienced backup to John Buck. The Phillies, who will be without Carlos Ruiz for the first 50 games of the season, could also have some interest.
