Options for Betancourt
By Doug Mittler
Veteran infielder Yuniesky Betancourt should have no shortage of suitors after being released by the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.
Betancourt hit a sizzling .447 this spring, so he was not cut for a lack of production. His minor league deal included an opt-out date that required the Phillies to notify Betancourt by Sunday if he had made the 25-man roster. With their hand forced, the Phillies decided to release the 31-year-old, a move that likely opens a bench spot for Freddy Galvis, reports Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News.
Among the teams that could check in on Betancourt are the New York Yankees, who may open the season with shortstop Derek Jeter on the disabled list, and the St. Louis Cardinals, who are dealing with a back injury to third baseman David Freese.
