Pomeranz the odd man out?
By Doug Mittler
Desperate for starting pitching, the Colorado Rockies scooped up Jon Garland on Sunday, one day after the veteran righthander was released by the Seattle Mariners.
Garland hasn't pitched in the majors since 2011, when he went 1-5 with a 4.33 ERA for the Dodgers as he battled shoulder pain, so his arrival is no guarantee of an improvement. It also calls into question exactly what the Rockies think of Drew Pomeranz, one of the key players acquired from Cleveland in the 2011 deal for Ubaldo Jimenez.
Pomeranz becomes the odd man out in the fifth starter race and is likely headed to Triple-A Colorado Springs, but there is a chance the 24-year-old lefthander could stick with the big league club as a long reliever, writes Troy Renck of the Denver Post.
Pomeranz has had an inconsistent spring with a 5.50 ERA in five outings.
