Pirates rotation after Karstens' injury
By Jason Catania
A lingering shoulder injury to Jeff Karstens, who was expected to be in the Pittsburgh Pirates rotation, means the final two spots in the five-man still need to be settled with a week left before the start of the season.
The first three slots are taken up by A.J. Burnett, Wandy Rodriguez and James McDonald. Karstens was in line for the fourth and left-hander Jeff Locke looked to be in the lead for No. 5.
But with Karstens out, the club has to figure out who can replace him, per MLB.com's Tom Singer: Jonathan Sanchez, Jeanmar Gomez and rookie Kyle McPherson.
Complicating matters is that Sanchez has an opt-out clause in his contract that needs to be decided on by Tuesday, the date by which the Pirates either need to put him on the 40-man roster or release the left-hander.
Don't forget about Francisco Liriano and Charlie Morton, who are both rehabbing injuries and should factor into the mix at some point soon, too.
