Garland's chances in Seattle
By Jason A. Churchill
Right-hander Jon Garland battled through six solid innings Thursday versus the Chicago Cubs on the eve of the Seattle Mariners' deadline to let Garland know he's either made the team or will be released, instead. Garland's competition runs deep, from youngsters Blake Beavan, Erasmo Ramirez and Brandon Maurer, to fellow veteran Jeremy Bonderman.
Garland bounced back from a poor showing versus the Netherlands' WBC roster last Friday and a few outings that landed in the disappointing file before that, but Thursday's start may be enough to force the M's to option out at least two of the three young arms -- and make room on the 40-man -- to keep Garland.
Garland has drawn interest from other teams who know he has the March 22 opt-out clause in his deal with Seattle, though such interest has waned over the pas few weeks due to his poor starts.
