Tigers closer options update
By Jason A. Churchill
So the Detroit Tigers are looking for a closer. Who saw this coming?
With rookie Bruce Rondon struggling in spring training, the Tigers have been linked to Chicago Cubs right-hander Carlos Marmol and free agent Brian Wilson. Rumor Central's Doug Mittler discussed those options and more right here as well as the idea that Rick Porcello could close.
Wednesday, reports surfaced that the Atlanta Braves' bullpen depth could mean they will listen to offers on Jonny Venters, who will otherwise serve as a setup man to Craig Kimbrel, perhaps the game's best closer. Venters has the stuff to handle the ninth inning and could conceivably be answer to the Tigers' questions late in the game.
Wilson isn't expected to audition until he's 100 percent -- he's currently at 80-85 percent after having Tommy John surgery -- leaving internal options and Marmol as the best bets, presuming the Braves ask for a nice return on Venters, who will not be a free agent until after the 2016 season and is set to earn $1.625 million this season.
