Blue Jays backup plan for Lawrie
By Jason A. Churchill
Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie battled an oblique injury in 2012 and tweaked his side Wednesday playing an exhibition game for Team Canada in preparation for the World Baseball Classic. He was reevaluated Thursday and has withdrawn from the Classic.
Such injuries can linger and if Lawrie's bleeds into the regular season, the Blue Jays may have to move some players around to accommodate. Maicer Izturis and Mark DeRosa are both capable of handling the hot corner and if need be, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion have experience at the position, too.
Lawrie shouldn't miss an extended period of time, but these are the kinds of injuries that can impact a player's fantasy value, too. This situation is worth monitoring as a result.
