Could the Red Sox deal a catcher?
By Doug Mittler
The Red Sox are prepared to enter the season with Jarrod Saltalamacchia as their No. 1 catcher, but the rising stock of Christian Vazquez might prompt a trade involving Saltalamacchia or Ryan Lavarnway, suggests Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
Vazquez, who posted a .254/.344/.369 at two minor league levels last season, is expected to begin the season at Double-A Portland, but Cafardo says the 22-year-old native of Puerto Rico “could rise quickly.”
Saltalamacchia remains the starter and manager John Farrell told Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com no decisions have been made on how much backup David Ross will play. Lavarnway, who hit .157 in 153 big league at-bats last season, is expected to begin the season in the minors.
