Stanton isn't trade bait for Fish

By Doug Mittler

A wild rumor out of Philadelphia on Tuesday had the Phillies “aggressively in pursuit” of Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, a report that was quickly shot down by David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News.

“If Stanton is made available, then there will be 29 teams attempting to acquire him, and the Phillies will not be the team that can put together the most impressive package of prospects for him,” Murphy writes. “And it would take an unprecedented package to make it happen, because the Marlins have absolutely no incentive to trade him.”

There was some speculation of Stanton being available after the Fish made their salary dump deal with the Blue Jays, but it made little sense for a club to trade a 23-year-old superstar being paid a portion of what he is worth. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweeted Tuesday night that Stanton is "not going anywhere."
