Mets outfield options
By Jason A. Churchill
The New York Mets were in the mix for Michael Bourn, but now that the centerfielder has signed with the Cleveland Indians the club's outfield competition lacks proven talent. Lucas Duda, Kirk Niewenhuis, Mike Baxter and Jordy Valdespin will be in the mix, and infielder Justin Turner is expected to get some reps in the outfield this spring, reports ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin.
There isn't much left on the free agent market with veterans Carlos Lee, Bobby Abreu and Johnny Damon each generally viewed as designated hitter material at this stage of their careers. Injury-prone Grady Sizemore could be a name the Mets look into, if they haven't already, though it's difficult to envision any club counting on him to stay healthy.
For depth purposes, Scott Podsednik, whom the Minnesota Twins are considering according to ESPN 1500, could make some sense.
We've discussed the potential availability of Drew Stubbs now that Bourn is slated to take over in center for the Indians. Other trade possibilities include Colorado's Dexter Fowler, who just agreed to a 2-year, $11.6 million deal with the Rockies. Fowler has been named in trade rumors on and off for the past several months. He's under club control through the 2015 season.
The Seattle Mariners could consider moving Franklin Gutierrez, though his value is at an all-time low due to the time he's missed with health issues.
