We predicted last Friday that if Seattle rookie left-hander James Paxton put together another impressive performance in St. Louis in his second career start, he'd become one of the favorites for a job in the back of the Mariners' rotation in 2014. Well Paxton did just that, delivering 6 shutout innings and striking out 5 along the way. He has now allowed only 1 earned run and struck out 8 in his first 12 big league innings.
It's impressive, no doubt, but it's also a very small sample size. To keep his foothold on a starting job behind Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma on the M's staff next season, Paxton has a number of things he must continue to prove.
