Orioles looking to deal?

1/23/2013

Could the Baltimore Orioles be planning a big splash late in the Hot Stove season?

The Orioles have been relatively quiet this winter (unless you consider the re-signing of Nate McLouth a blockbuster), and who can blame them following a 93-win season and their first-playoff berth since 1997? But with a few weeks to go before spring training, the Birds are pursuing a trade for Diamondbacks outfielder Jason Kubel and also are interested in Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello, reports Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

No deal appears close, and Rosenthal says it seems unlikely that the Orioles would acquire both players. The Orioles also have been linked to free agent pitcher Joe Saunders and Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano.

ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney reported Tuesday the D-backs continued to weigh offers for Kubel and Justin Upton, adding a deal involving Kubel is more likely because of his reasonable salary (7.5 million in 2013). Olney tweets Wednesday the D-backs want to make a decision on trading Upton or Kubel by Friday.

If Kubel lands in Baltimore, he would compete with McLouth and Nolan Reimold for playing time in left field. Kubel also could be a DH, a position filled primarily by Chris Davis last season.

The Tigers are willing to deal Porcello for the right price after re-signing free agent pitcher Anibal Sanchez earlier this offseason.
