We wouldn’t necessarily call it an open tryout, but there are plenty of opportunities for veteran starters to win a job with the Colorado Rockies.
The Rockies agreed to a $1.5 million minor-league contract with pitcher Chris Volstad and are aggressively pursuing Carl Pavano and/or Derek Lowe, says Troy Renck of the Denver Post. The Rockies reportedly would like to finalize a deal with another veteran this week.
Pavano, an effective pitcher when healthy, has been linked to the New York Mets, among others, in recent weeks.
The Rockies ranked dead last in the majors with a 5.81 ERA last season, so the competition is wide open. Three starters - Jorge De La Rosa, Jhoulys Chacin and Juan Nicasio – have health issues, adding to the need for an innings-eater.
