Impact of Harrison's extension

The Texas Rangers signed left-hander Matt Harrison to a five-year, $55 million extension this week, solidifying their starting rotation beyond 2013. The impact such a deal makes will undoubtedly spread beyond Arlington, however. As arbitration eligible starters continue to talk to their clubs about their contracts, Harrison's deal serves as a baseline. The southpaw was set for another year of arbitration after the 2013 season and then free agency after 2014.
