Mejia's future as a starter

1/22/2013

While his future with the New York Mets remains in flux, Jenrry Mejia is more likely to end up as a starter than a reliever, says MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo.

If the season were to begin today (it’s a good thing it’s not since the temperature at Citi Field is a frigid 22 degrees and falling), Mejia could even end up as the fifth starter. That could change since the Mets are looking for a veteran to replace the innings lost by the trade of R.A. Dickey to Toronto.

Mejia has struggled in parts of two seasons with the Mets (4.91 ERA), but the righthander is still just 23 and appears healthy following Tommy John surgery in 2011. DiComo says there is a "decent chance" Mejia will begin the season in Triple-A and continue to work on being a starter.
