Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports Cuddyer, the National League batting champion a year ago, anticipates being ready for a minor-league rehab assignment in a week to 10 days. Even if all goes well, that would see to put Cuddyer in line for a return to the majors in mid to late August.
Cuddyer’s three-year, $31.5 million deal with Colorado ends after this season and there is no guarantee that the Rockies will want him back at the prevailing free agent rate. The Rockies did not trade from their surplus of young outfielders at the deadline and are set at third base with Nolan Arenado.
If Cuddyer gets back a little earlier than expected and proves he is healthy, perhaps the Rockies can arrange a late-August waiver trade. Teams are scrambling for offense and Cuddyer has 182 career home runs on his resume.
