Is Carpenter seeing too many pitches?

Matt Carpenter finished fourth in National League MVP voting last season after batting .318 with 55 doubles, 7 triples and 11 home runs, leading to a six-year, $52 million extension.
Fast-forward to this season, and the 28-year-old is off to a rough start, particularly in terms of strikeouts (32). Could being overly patient at the plate be the culprit for Carpenter's slow start?
