Ray McCallum's NBA upside

By Luke Lapinski

Detroit will need a strong finish to have any hope of cracking the NCAA Tournament this season. The Titans have faced some quality opponents (Miami, Syracuse and Pittsburgh to name a few), but their 16-9 record all but solidifies the notion that they'll need to win the Horizon League tournament to get invited to the Big Dance.

On the bright side, they have just the sort of player that could lead the way on such a run. Ray McCallum was already a force to be reckoned with during his freshman and sophomore campaigns, and he's taken it to a new level as a junior. He tops the team with 18.9 points, 4.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game -- all while chipping in 4.8 rebounds every night.  And whether Detroit is able to return to the Field of 68 or not, McCallum could be setting himself up nicely for the future. Our own Chad Ford calls him the "sleeper point guard of the draft" and currently has him slotted in at No. 35 on his big board. He also suggests McCallum is more than capable of cracking the first round if he continues to perform like this.

Chad Ford
Don't overlook McCallum
"McCallum is another player who thrives, in part, because he has such a superior feel for the game. He's very quick, can be a defensive hawk and thinks pass first. He needs to improve as a shooter, but given the way he has matured this season, his game has very few holes. I think he's the sleeper point guard of the draft, and I wouldn't be shocked at all to see his name called in the first round."
