Oregon's off-the-radar commit
Oregon landed a commitment on Sunday from 6-foot-5 JUCO wing Jalil Abdul-Bassit (North Idaho College), according to Bob Rickert of The Oregonian.
Abdul-Bassit is a bit of a wild card recruit in that he's from Anchorage, Alaska and hasn't had the exposure that many of today's recruits have. On top of that, his numbers at North Idaho College don't jump off the page at you -- 12.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1 assist per game this season, according to Brad Winton of JucoRecruiting.com.
Where the swingman may be able to help Oregon is from 3-point land, where he's shooting 42 percent this season, and also in the transition game, where the Ducks suddenly have a stable of athletic young guards and wings who can run the floor. They'll need someone to take the place of savvy swingman E.J. Singler, and one has to believe that Abdul-Bassit's experience could give him a chance for early playing time. According to Rickert, he's is expected to have three years to play two.
