Rutgers' big commit

By Matt Giles

When Shane Rector left NYC this past August, joining a long line of NYC prospects to decamp for New England prep schools before finishing high school, the consensus was that the guard had enrolled at South Kent to increase his standing on the recruiting trail and further develop his game. The 6-foot-1 guard was constantly mentioned this summer during various AAU tournaments, but was known more for his athleticism rather than his skill-set. However, a few months at South Kent has reportedly helped Rector, especially in his transition to a pure point guard, and the guard decided to commit to Rutgers.

This move will benefit both the Scarlet Knights and Rector. Rutgers' backcourt depth will be bolstered, and Mike Rice and his staff can slowly bring Rector along without having to play his major minutes immediately -- Myles Mack, Jerome Seagears, and Eli Carter will still be in the fold until 2015-16. For Rector, he will have time to continue developing his skills, and by playing Mack and Seagears each day in practice, his ability to run Rice's system will allow him to immediately take the offensive reins as a junior.

What Rector needs to improve upon
"He'll need to continue to polish his point guard skills and decision-making ability over the next two years while also becoming a more consistent outside shooter, but his playmaking abilities should help him earn an immediate niche off the bench next season ... By landing a commitment so soon after making its offer, Rutgers not only secures a playmaker for the future but also locks up one of the better lead guard prospects left on the national board."
