Right decision for McGary and GRIII?
By Luke Lapinski
Freshman standouts Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III are set to have a press conference this afternoon to discuss their basketball future. And, according to Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports, they're going to announce a return to Michigan for next season. That's obviously great news for the Wolverines if it plays out that way. So what would it mean to McGary and GRIII?
At the moment, our own Chad Ford has both players slotted in right near the end of the lottery if they had chosen to jump to the NBA. In other words, they'd be passing on guaranteed money to stay in Ann Arbor, and nobody knows what may or may not happen in the next 12 months. Next year's draft is supposed to be loaded, so either player's stock could take a hit -- even if they just continue to perform at the same level they were at this season. And McGary, in particular, is coming off a monster performance under pressure in the NCAA Tournament with everyone watching. His regular season stats were somewhat pedestrian, but everyone is talking about his upside right now. Isn't that the definition of someone's draft stock being at an all-time high?
At the same time, it's tough to fault two kids for wanting to stay in school. Sure, they may be passing on money now, but college is a once in a lifetime experience. And it's entirely possible that they use the next year to evolve into better basketball players. Each has room to improve on the court. And -- even if it costs them money in the short term -- it could be worth it if it makes them more valuable players in the long term anyway.
