Johnson primed for breakout?
By Matt Giles
It is somewhat shocking that Geron Johnson hasn't received as much publicity as some of his fellow Memphis backcourt 'mates. The junior college transfer is capable of scoring 20 points in a burst of several minutes, exploding to the rim with force that equals some of Memphis' bigs, and while his offensive rating -- 101.1 -- is underwhelming, Johnson has developed into a perfect complement to Chris Crawford and Joe Jackson in the Tigers' backcourt (his low amount of free throw attempts -- just 54 through 24 games -- may have altered his offensive rating).
The guard is returning near his Dunbar, OH home when Memphis takes on Xavier, and Jason Smith of the Memphis Commercial-Appeal notes Johnson may be the most popular player in the Cintas Center during the contest. As many as 150 friends and family are attending the unique non-conference tilt -- his former high school rented buses for people to attend the game. If Johnson is able to make a significant dent in the scoring column -- he has been held to single digits in the two most recent games, but did manage to dish out seven assists in a win over Southern Miss -- Xavier's on-campus gym may turn into the loudest venue in Ohio.
