Earlier this week, we wrote about the in-state recruiting success Penn State has had since head coach Patrick Chambers took the helm two years ago. As hoped for at the time of the hire, the program is now attracting high-level Philadelphia talent. Over the weekend, three-star PG Shep Garner (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) committed to Penn State while 2015 center Mike Watkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) committed last week.

How Melson helps the Zags

By the time Gonzaga's class of 2014 enters their campus, both Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell Jr. will be seniors, and since Mark Few and his staff failed to land a guard in either the 2012 or '13 classes, it is imperative that Gonzaga focus nearly entirely on deepening their backcourt. It has been reported that both Namon Wright and Jordan McLaughlin are being intensely pursued by the Bulldogs, but since there will be plenty of minutes available, the recent commitment of Silas Melson, a 6-foot-2 guard, makes sense.

Auburn seeking backcourt help

When Jerome Seagears decided Auburn was too far away from the east coast, and that he would transfer back to Rutgers, Auburn coach Tony Barbee was stuck. The squad lacked significant backcourt depth, and both of the Tigers' primary distributors -- Frankie Sullivan and Josh Wallace -- were no longer on the roster. Tahj Shamsid-Deen is joining the program, but Barbee would have to rely on Chris Denson, a guard who is more of a scorer than a distributor, and Virginia transfer K.T. Harrell to stabilize the team's ball-handling duties.

Crimson Tide's undersized roster

Anthony Grant has had a troubling offseason. First came news that Moussa Gueye, Alabama's lone 7-footer, would transfer for his final season of eligibility, an announcement that was followed by Trevor Lacey's decision to leave Tuscaloosa (ultimately committing to North Carolina State). Lacey was the first significant in-state prospect Grant convinced to commit to Alabama, and his loss -- both in recruiting and on the offensive side of ball -- cannot be overstated. Now, it would appear that another Alabama native will not play for the Tide next season.

We have written frequently regarding Oregon coach Dana Altman's philosophy towards transfers and how ex-Houston wing Joseph Young is reportedly considering Eugene for his final two college seasons. However, while the Ducks may have lost several players from a year ago, we have to wonder what affect these late-spring additions will have on Oregon's scholarship numbers.

ESPN's No. 1 ranked recruit in 2016, Harry Giles (Winston-Salem, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy), reportedly suffered a major knee injury over the past week while playing for USA's U16 team at the FIBA Americas Championship in Uruguay.

There are numerous questions going forward: How long will it take Giles to recover? Will he be the same player when he returns to the court? And how will his spot atop the class of 2016 be affected?

Brandone Francis (Jacksonville, Fla./Arlington Country Day School) is ranked as ESPN's No. 34 recruit in the class of 2014, with the reputation of being a strong, athletic shooting guard with good size (6-foot-5, 205 pounds) who can do a little bit of everything on the court.

And according to an update today, there's a good chance Francis could be taking his talents to one of two schools: Florida or Louisville.

Other than Iowa State, perhaps no school has been more active when it comes to adding transfers than that of Oregon. It may not be a coincidence, then, that it was Dana Altman's Ducks that landed JUCO forward Richard Amardi, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound senior forward who was let out of his letter-of-intent by the Cyclones last week.

Houston transfer Joseph Young is coming off a year where he averaged 18 PPG, shot 42 percent from 3-point range and a blistering 87.5 percent from the foul line. It's safe to say Young would be a welcome addition for just about any team in the land. A report today has four schools in the lead for the 6-foot-3 shooting guard.

Yesterday's news that Jon Graham is transferring from Penn State may not seem like a big deal to some people. After all, the fourth-year junior averaged only 1.9 points and 2.7 rebounds last season. But his loss may still be a big one for Patrick Chambers' squad.

Can Canty help UW in hoops?

Jalen Canty (Vallejo, Calif./Saint Patrick Saint Vincent High), a 6-foot-6, 220-pound power forward, has committed to Washington according to a tweet late Monday by Yay Area's Finest. There are conflicting reports as to whether he will sign on as a football or basketball recruit at UW, but he tells Marshall Cherrington of Dawgman.com that he plans to play both sports for the Huskies, and he also revealed via Twitter that his scholarship is for basketball.

The big question as far as Lorenzo Romar is concerned is whether Canty can help the basketball team. We have our doubts.
