Who scores for Pitt?

In what was essentially a trade between two former Big East teams, J.J. Moore transferred to Rutgers and, recently, Derrick Randall decided to trek from New Brunswick to Pittsburgh. There is a slight chance Pitt will pursue a waiver to allow Randall to suit up next season, but it is more likely that Randall will have to sit out the 2013-14 season. Due to the loss of various Panthers, from Tray Woodall to Steven Adams, coach Jamie Dixon will have a plethora of points to replace when the college season tips; at one point, DeAndre Kane was going to play a major role in Pitt's offense, but the former Marshall guard reconsidered his decision and trekked to Ames. While James Robinson will certainly have to bridge the role of facilitator and scorer, we wanted to highlight another Panther who could see his role widen this upcoming year.

Buzz building for PC's backcourt

When Providence takes the court for the start of next season, Vincent Council's absence will duly be noted. The guard, a mainstay in the Friars' backcourt and a guard who consistently had one of the nation's top assist rates, has no more eligibility left, and control of Ed Cooley's offense will now be run through Bryce Cotton and Kris Dunn, a sophomore who missed much of the first half of the 2012-13 season. Since Cotton is more skilled off the ball and is known throughout the Big East as a player capable of offensively taking over the game, especially from beyond the arc, we want to specifically focus on Dunn.

When Patrick Chambers was first hired at Penn State, brought to the Big Ten school from Boston University, the move was universally lauded due to Chambers' prowess and success recruiting the Philadelphia-area. As a former assistant at Villanova, Chambers was integral in convincing the top talent in Philadelphia to commit to the Big East school, and the thought was Chambers could translate that same success at the helm of the Nittany Lions' program.

Though his recruitment is still in its infancy, it's very much clear that the hype surrounding Stephen Zimmerman will only continue to grow until the 6-foot-11 big chooses a college. Rick Pitino to John Calipari and Steve Alford are interested in the class of 2015 big -- Zimmerman's mother recently spoke to Scout's Steve Clark, and noted that since schools were allowed to contact her son, he has heard from more than a dozen of the nation's top programs. However, there was one school in that list to stood out to us -- St. John's.

Over the weekend, we mentioned the tremendous job Colorado State did to land underrated 2014 guard Jeremiah Paige, a potential impact player on both ends of the court.

But the Rams also have six newcomers joining the team this fall, and one of them could be the program's next star.

Expectations were riding high for UCLA at this time last year, with the Bruins pulling in ESPN's top-rated recruiting 2012 and in position to roll through the Pac-12 along with fellow conference power Arizona.

Today, the crown jewel from that recruiting class, Shabazz Muhammad, is no longer with the program, and several others from the class of 2012 (Kyle Anderson and Jordan Adams) could be entering their final year with the Bruins before they, too, declare for the NBA draft. This is just one of the issues new coach Steve Alford faces in his first season after replacing long-time Bruins coach Ben Howland.

We have written frequently about Bishop Loughlin guard Khadeen Carrington; the 6-foot-3 guard is being targeted by a plethora of Big East schools, but has been intensely pursued by St. John's. During the past high school season, Steve Lavin and Tony Chiles, specifically, made frequent trips to the Brooklyn-based high school to watch Carrington in action.

There was an expectation among Jeff Jones and his staff that ex-Clemson guard Donte Hill would be eligible next season. The guard's history is well-documented: after his freshman season at the ACC school, Hill played eight minutes in a closed scrimmage, then decided to transfer to Old Dominion, and while he played two seasons at the CAA school, he thought he would have his final season of eligibility remaining (2013-14). However, the NCAA decided Hill's college career was done, and now Jones is scrambling to shore up the Monarchs' backcourt next season.

When Mike Poole transferred from Rutgers to Iona, many who follow college hoops around the tri-state area assumed Iona would add one other transfer this offseason. The player who was thought to likely follow Poole was his RU teammate, Derrick Randall, but it has been some time since the forward visited the New Rochelle-based campus and he is now linked to either Minnesota (though that also now seems unlikely), Pittsburgh, and Wagner. However, there had been whispers that coach Tim Cluess was close to adding another player to the roster, and it was confirmed by Adam Zagoria of Zagsblog.com that Monmouth forward Marcus Ware will trek to Iona.
