We should know soon whether Steven Stamkos, who has not played since November after breaking his leg, will be cleared to play for Canada at the Sochi Olympic Games. Stamkos wants to play in a game for the Tampa Bay Lightning before deciding whether he is healthy enough to go. The Lightning have three games remaining before the break, with the last one being Saturday against Detroit.

But as the search continues for the team's next GM, they experienced a somewhat unique player situation this week: after trying to send Mikhail Grigorenko down to their AHL affiliate for conditioning, they were informed by the NHL that this wasn't allowed. The New York Islanders rolled the dice Sunday night, acquiring two-time 40-goal scorer Thomas Vanek from the Buffalo Sabres for Matt Moulson, a first-round pick in 2014 and a second-round pick in 2015. There has been speculation that Vanek, a free agent after the season, will sign with the Minnesota Wild this summer, so the Islanders are gambling he will be more than a short-term rental, reports Katie Strang of ESPNNewYork.com.

What’s in a name? Apparently little with the Carolina Hurricanes. The club announced Sunday night that Jason Karmanos, the son of majority owner Peter Karmanos, has been fired as executive VP and general manager after 15 seasons with the franchise. Peter Karmanos said it was a “family matter” and GM Jim Rutherford said it had nothing to do with job performance.
