Last month, Recruiting Nation's Dave Telep noted that North Carolina's next big target in 2014 was very likely Rashad Vaughn (Minneapolis, Minn./Findlay College Prep), the top-ranked shooting guard in the class. But if the Tar Heels are going to land Vaughn, they're going to have to fend off quite an impressive group of suitors.

Iowa State Cyclones commit Kory Kodanko (De Pere, Wis./West De Pere) played offensive tackle in high school, but he tells ESPN.com recruiting expert Damon Sayles that he'll moving inside to play guard in the Big 12.

Kansas director of basketball operations and former Nebraska and UTEP coach Doc Sadler was hired as an assistant coach at Iowa State, reported ESPN's Jason King. This is big news for Iowa State as they continue to reposition themselves as a forceful recruiting player in the Midwest and elsewhere.

After a recruitment which included one apparent commitment and rumors galore, former Marshall guard DeAndre Kane decided to transfer to Iowa State last week. Kane will be eligible immediately because he is a graduate transfer.

Iowa State has qualified for the NCAA tournament two years in a row. They've done so in large part through Division I and JUCO transfers. Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg operated with intentions to "win now" and has subsequently shown that he can do it. The same recipe is in place for 2013-14 as Hoiberg is hauling in four JUCO transfers to play immediately.

The basketball program at Iowa State has really taken off under Fred Hoiberg in recent years. Since "The Mayor" took over in 2010-11, the Cyclones have gone dancing twice -- winning an NCAA Tournament game each time. In fact, this past season, they nearly ousted No. 2 seed Ohio State and advanced to the Sweet 16.

The better news: Even if Johnson suffers a setback, they have five other quality runners upon whom they can rely.
