Betancourt on Cardinals' radar?
By Doug Mittler
The United States’ tenure in the World Baseball Classic fell short of a visit to the semifinals, but it was long enough for Yuniesky Betancourt, who got some extra at-bats in Phillies camp as a fill in for USA shortstop Jimmy Rollins.
The 31-year-old Betancourt, who spent last season in Kansas City, is hitting .412 with seven RBI in 34 Grapefruit League at-bats and has benefited from the added exposure. Betancourt has a March 24 opt-out on his contract and is drawing attention from the Cardinals, says Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
The Cardinals will be without shortstop Rafael Furcal following Tommy John surgery and likely are looking for some insurance at shortstop behind Pete Kozma, who hit .333 as a late-season call-up but has just 89 career at-bats.
