Stanford's backup QBs take stage
By Vince Verhei
Josh Nunes opened the 2012 season as Stanford's starting quarterback. He was benched for Kevin Hogan in the middle of the year, and now there's a good chance he could lose the backup job in spring drills. Tom FitzGerald of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Nunes will miss spring ball with an undisclosed arm or shoulder injury, which will give more playing time to Stanford's other passers.
"While Hogan is firmly entrenched as the No. 1 quarterback, Nunes' absence will open opportunities for backups like sophomore Evan Crower and freshman Dallas Lloyd, who joined the team last fall after a two-year Mormon mission," FitzGerald writes.
"It opens the door for them to show what they can do," coach David Shaw said.
