'Zona AD talks RichRod extension

By Vince Verhei

After his very first season with the school, Rich Rodriguez has signed a contract extension with the Arizona Wildcats. That may sound unusual, but Arizona's athletic director says it's necessary due to the financial situation with which he has to work.

Rodriguez' original contract was a five-year deal, and his extension put another year on the end. "Some universities out there have the flexibility of doing very long contracts, seven-plus years," Greg Byrne tells Patrick Finley of the Arizona Daily Star. "We do not, and I understand why we have the parameters that we do.

"I think when you have somebody special, like Rich Rodriguez and (UA men's basketball coach) Sean Miller and a number of our other coaches, I like to try to keep them at that five-year number, if that will work with our university and Board of Regents."
