Panthers looking for defense

By AJ Mass

The Carolina Panthers finished last season in the bottom half of the league in terms of points allowed, giving up 22.7 points per game. Because of this obvious shortcoming, The Charlotte Observer suggests that the team will likely make defense the focus of off-season improvements, both via free agency and the draft.

Free agents that could tickle the Panthers fancy include Chris Canty, Brent Grimes and Kenny Phillips, though knee issues may end up scuttling that last suggestion. Of course, there's also the upcoming NFL Draft, where potential first round picks Kenny Vaccaro (Texas) and Jonathan Banks (Mississippi State) could help shore up the secondary without the need for shelling out the big bucks.
