Detroit's FA plans

By Tim Kavanagh

After purging their roster of three players earlier this week -- WR Titus Young, G Stephen Peterman and DE Kyle Vanden Bosch -- the Detroit Lions have an extra $8.5 million in cap space. But as we know, they've got a small army of impending free agents to worry about, so there could be some more roster churn on the way.

However, after the team is through clearing the roster (and restructuring some players' deals to be more cap-friendly), the Lions are going shopping. "We were non-players in free agency last year," GM Martin Mayhew acknowledged Thursday, per DetroitLions.com. "I do think that we plan to make some moves."

Depending upon the decisions they make with their own FAs -- and Mayhew confirmed that they won't be using the franchise tag on anyone -- this will help set the agenda in free agency and the draft. They will most likely need to address the DE position, and adding some pieces in the secondary will also be likely, given that CB Chris Houston and S Louis Delmas are both impending free agents.

They need to shake things up a bit
"The Lions overvalued their roster last season by standing pat. They can't afford to reverse course too much in free agency this year, but for most teams, the best team-building approach includes participation in every avenue available."
