Lorenzo Brown's status
By Luke Lapinski
UPDATE: It's looking more and more likely that Lorenzo Brown won't be able to suit up for North Carolina State against Miami today. The junior point guard sprained his ankle in the Wolfpack's loss to Virginia earlier this week, and Mark Gottfried was preparing his team to play today as if they wouldn't have arguably their most important player.
Obviously, today's tilt with the Hurricanes is a big one, but NC State needs Brown healthy for the long haul, rather than just one game in February. And while he hasn't officially been ruled out for today, Gottfried also didn't rule out the possibility of his top perimeter weapon missing multiple games. That's certainly not the greatest timing with No. 5 Duke looming next on the schedule (Feb. 7). If Brown can't go, Rodney Purvis figures to see more time at the point, and Tyler Lewis would likely see more playing time in general.
North Carolina State's roller coaster ride continues. The Wolfpack entered this season amid plenty of hype, looked a little shaky early on, then surged through the month of December -- ultimately rattling off 10 consecutive victories that culminated with an eight-point triumph over previously undefeated Duke.
Since then, however, Mark Gottfried's squad has dropped three of five. And last night's loss in Virginia could be costly. That's because Lorenzo Brown sprained his ankle in the first half, and his status for the team's next game is up in the air. Gottfried indicated his star point guard is questionable at the moment, noting that it's too early to tell just yet.
Of all the talented players on this roster, a case could be made that Brown is the one NC State can least afford to lose. He's done just about everything that's been asked of him since coming to Raleigh, and has excelled every step of the way. Plus he's the guy who runs the show, scoring when needed and distributing the ball to players like C.J. Leslie and T.J. Warren in a way that puts them in position to succeed. If he's unable to go on Saturday, the Wolfpack could be scrambling -- especially with red-hot Miami coming to town.
