Garza back in two weeks?
By Jason A. Churchill
Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza appears back on track for a first-half return.
The veteran was set to make three more rehab starts after tossing 42 pitches for Double-A Tennessee Wednesday, but now there are reports that he could make just two more. Such a schedule likely puts his ETA for sometime later this month, assuming there are no setbacks.
The Cubs could field calls on the veteran right-hander if he gets back healthy and builds some trade value before the July 31 deadline, although there also has been talk of potential contract extension negotiations. Needless to say, his health is essential to a new contract, too.
The Cubs are now rolling out Jeff Samardzija, Edwin Jackson, Travis Wood, Scott Feldman and Carlos Villanueva. The former two are locked in, but Wood, Feldman and Villanueva will have to earn the right to keep their starting gigs once Garza is ready to jump into the mix. Villanueva may have the leg up in that battle right now, based on recent performance.
